Whey Protein and how it can help manage appetite
Whey protein has long been touted as a great addition to a muscle building program. As a result, most people associate protein powders with muscle growth and putting on weight (muscle weight, in this case). Surprisingly, the powder also has other benefits, including the ability to help you lose weight. How? Turns out that whey protein can be an excellent tool to help control your appetite.
In a joint study conducted by three universities in Sweden and Denmark, researchers found that taking whey protein can help regulate your blood sugar levels. Stable blood sugar levels means less cravings and a reduction in appetite. In fact, participants in the study experienced a greater reduction in appetite when taking whey protein than after eating a protein-rich meal (containing turkey and eggs).
Because whey protein reduces appetite, you end up eating fewer calories without even trying. This can help you control your overall calorie intake and can result in weight loss, even if you're not making any other changes in your diet. As a general rule, any type of protein promotes satiety, but whey protein is especially helpful because it’s low in calories and fat – while other forms of protein will fill you up but cost you in the way of extra calories.
Whey protein is also a good choice is you’re experiencing an increase in appetite due to stress or a more intense workout program. When your blood sugar is unbalanced or goes up and down throughout the day, you tend to crave carbohydrates, especially sugary snacks. This is because sugars are quickly metabolized, helping ease cravings temporarily. By adding more whey protein to your diet, you can help fight those cravings, which can interfere with your weight loss program.
When combined with a strength training program, whey protein can help enhance your metabolism and speed up your weight loss. Also, keep in mind that the more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism works and the faster you lose weight, so the benefits are even greater.
